Gentleman and Lady Style
Classic: Green & Pink
The Prickly Pair Chairs emerged from the creative perspective of a Mexican designer working in Europe, bringing together the playful contrasts of both cultural sensibilities. The project blends the bold expressiveness often associated with Mexican visual culture with the refined formal language of European design, resulting in a piece where these two worlds coexist.
At once humorous and provocative, the chairs embrace contradiction. Shapes, materials, colours and textures collide in a spirited yet harmonious composition, creating an object that is both whimsical and reflective. In doing so, The Prickly Pair Chairs challenge preconceived ideas about taste, identity and cultural aesthetics.
More than a decade after their creation, the chairs have become an iconic design piece. They have been widely published in international design media and exhibited at major design events across Europe and the Americas.
The Prickly Pair Chairs are part of several private collections—including that of Karl Lagerfeld—and have been represented by design-art galleries in Paris, Milan, New York and Mexico City. The chairs are also included in the permanent design collection of the Denver Art Museum.

The Prickly Pair Chairs Tenango De Doria
Commissioned by Bergdorf Goodman NYC
Building upon the iconic Prickly Pair Chairs, this new edition introduces a vibrant dialogue between contemporary design and traditional Mexican craftsmanship.
The chairs are upholstered in Tenangos de Doria, extraordinary hand-embroidered textiles created by Otomí artisans from the town of Tenango de Doria, Hidalgo, Mexico. These remarkable embroideries are known for their lively compositions depicting fantastic animals, flowers, mythical creatures and human figures—often narrating scenes of daily life with humor and imagination.
Each textile is meticulously embroidered with cotton thread on pre-washed cotton canvas, forming richly layered visual landscapes where folklore, symbolism and storytelling intertwine. Every Tenango emerges from the intimate relationship between the artisans and the natural world, making each piece unique in both composition and narrative.
The fabrics used for the Prickly Pair Tenango de Doria chairs were specially commissioned from the Tenango Textiles Collective, supporting the work and cultural heritage of the Otomí women artisans who preserve this extraordinary embroidery tradition.
Through this collaboration, the Prickly Pair Chairs acquire a new dimension—where contemporary design meets living craft traditions, transforming the object into a celebration of cultural dialogue, color and storytelling.
